West Virginia's trout stocking begins Jan. 4; WVDNR announces changes for 2016

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The 2016 trout stocking season that begins Monday, Jan. 4, will see several changes, according to Bret Preston, assistant chief for the Division of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Section.
Seven streams and one pond have been removed from the 2016 trout stocking schedule. These streams are either too small, have very limited angler access, few stocking locations, poor trout habitat, or a combination of these characteristics.
These streams include Deer Creek in Nicholas County, Long Marsh Run in Jefferson County, Lower Cove Run in Hardy County, Mill Run of Back Creek in Berkeley County, both the North and South forks of Fishing Creek in Wetzel County, and South Fork of Potts Creek in Monroe County. The smaller of the two Larenim Park lakes was removed from the stocking list due to the lack of adequate vehicle access.
Buffalo Creek in Clay County has been added to the stocking schedule. Remediation from historical mining activities, habitat improvement, and acquisition of public access made it a great candidate for put-and-take trout stocking. DNR personnel will stock Buffalo Creek in a 3.75-mile section in the Swandale Road area on a monthly stocking schedule.
The 2016 fishing regulations brochure, available at license agents, WVDNR offices and online at www.wvdnr.gov, lists which waters will receive one stocking during January. The stocking schedule is dependent upon weather and road conditions.
DNR Wildlife Resources personnel will start stocking at a high rate to promote trout distribution during periods of good stream flow. Reducing the number of trout in the hatcheries early in the year helps promote trout growth and provides larger fish for anglers throughout the entire spring stocking season, which concludes May 31.
Anglers can call the Fishing Hotline at 304-558-3399 or visit the website at www.wvdnr.gov to find out which streams and lakes have been stocked each day. Anglers also are reminded that new fishing licenses are required for 2016 and may be purchased at a license agent or online at www.wvfish.com.    
Anglers are also encouraged to check out DNR's online interactive map at www.mapwv.gov/huntfish. The map indicates which streams and lakes are stocked, the stream section that is stocked, special fishing regulation areas, and driving directions to stocked waters.

The goal of the stocking is to enhance trout fishing opportunities in the Gauley River, especially in the remote canyon section of the Gauley River, according to DNR Director Frank Jezioro. The trout stockings were conducted by helicopter and should provide good fishing in the summer and fall, Jezioro said.
The program is supported by rafting fees to compensate for additional days of whitewater rafting flows on the Gauley River and reduced fishing opportunities during these high flows released from Summersville Dam.

Trout Stocking Suspended on Laurel Creek, Clay County

ELKINS, W.Va. – The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources announces that trout stockings on Laurel Creek in Clay County have been suspended indefinitely due to poor road conditions.

“Over the years, the access road used for stocking trout has deteriorated to the point where our stock trucks are constantly getting stuck,” according to Curtis I. Taylor, Chief of the Wildlife Resources Section. “We cannot afford to have our stock trucks damaged or put our employees in danger of getting hurt while attempting to free their trucks from the mud and soft gravel areas.”
Laurel Creek was added to the DNR’s stocking schedule in the mid-1990s, at which time stockings could be made throughout much of its length. A number of fords must be crossed to complete the stockings, and over the years these have deteriorated so much, that in recent years, only a few of the upper fords could be crossed.

DNR Announces Changes for the 2013 Spring Trout Stocking Season

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources has several changes for the current trout stocking season, according to Curtis I. Taylor, Chief of the DNR Wildlife Resources Section.

Trout stocking of Laurel Fork of Holly River in Webster County will be delayed as a result of ongoing work at Holly River State Park. The park is currently closed as contractors work to restore power and repair infrastructure that was damaged by Superstorm Sandy. “We hope to stock trout there in March,” Taylor said.
Trout stocking of Boley Lake and Glade Creek (of Manns Creek) in Fayette County also will be delayed due to replacement of the bridge that spans Glade Creek and provides access to the stream and lake. Work on the new bridge is expected to be completed by late March and trout stockings should resume in April.
The Corps of Engineers plans to dewater and clean the stilling basin at R. D. Bailey Lake in Wyoming/Mingo counties. Trout typically are stocked in the stilling basin below the dam and downstream. This work is scheduled for late March and is expected to be completed by April 4, 2013. Due to the scheduled dewatering, trout will not be stocked in the stilling basin until after the work is completed. Trout will be stocked downstream according to the normal schedule.
New Creek Lake (Site 14), in Grant County, will not be stocked until the Natural Resources Conservation Service has filled the impoundment. The lake was drained a couple of years ago to facilitate repairs to the water-release structure. After partial filling, NRCS will test the gates used to regulate the amount of water discharged from the lake. If the tests are satisfactory, the lake will be filled to its normal pool level. Trout stocking is expected to begin later this spring.
“As these waters become available for trout stocking, we will put a notice on the daily trout stocking update page,” said Taylor.

If you are looking for some cold entertainment; most of the weekly stocked trout streams received their January trout allotment this week. The nights have been frigid in the mountain counties and water with little current has started icing over. If you are tough enough or crazy enough; I suppose there are trout out there to be caught.
The weather is supposed to improve for the upcoming week and temperatures are expected to be in the forties. That is a little more appealing to me. It may be time to buy a trout stamp; then. The waters that were stocked this week are listed on the Stream Report page of High Virginia Outdoors.

Mountain Trout This Week: 3/7/11-3/13/11

Rain, rain, rain and then some snow.  It seems that we have a pattern established.  Unless you are one who is satisfied with soaking some play dough in a fish pond; there isn't much to look forward to.  High and muddy is about all that can be said.  The fish truck was finally able to get into the West Fork of the Greenbrier this week. The trout trucks in both WV and VA were out in full force once again.  If we are ever able to get out and fish; there should be plenty of fish available and they will be spread out.  I am starting to believe that we may be in a race for time to get out; before the rivers dry up.
  I was able to make about a dozen casts into Dry Fork on Monday.  There were some very small black stone flies crawling around on the rocks the adults were size 18 or smaller.  At least there is some life down there in the underwater world.  I made about the same number of attempts in the Blackwater River on Tuesday.  I did see one sculpin  swimming around there.  There isn't much else to comment on; until this stupid weather pattern breaks.  It isn't any better over in Virginia, but at least they probably will not get the snow that the mountains will be receiving over the next couple of days.

Mountain Trout This Week

No WV waters were stocked during the week ending on 1/15. Back Creek in Bath County, VA received a stocking this week.  The weather is usually a little milder over there. The Back Creek Valley is one of my favorite places on earth. If you have never been in this area before; do yourself a favor and visit the area this spring. Wintertime Trout

Last weekends' thaw has allowed some trout stocking to take place on popular WV waters.  Glady Fork, Gandy Creek,Anthony Creek, North Fork of the South Branch,South Branch,Spruce Knob Lake, Lower Shavers Fork and the Elk have all received trout this week.
It is always nice to get out that first time; weather permitting.  The snow is supposed to set in again on Thursday evening, so the window of opportunity is pretty narrow.  check out the Stream Report page on High Virginia Outdoors for updates.
