Butterfly of the Month/July-Harris' Checkerspot

The Butterflies Of West Virginia and their Caterpillars (Pitt Series in Nature and Natural History)

The Harris' Checkerspot (Chlosyne harrisii liggetti) is a common butterfly of higher elevations. The larvae feeds on the Flat-top White Aster (Aster umbellatus), which grows only in high mountain bogs. This butterfly is very common in the Canaan Valley area. Look for this species in June and July, while on your high mountain tours.
